This was a really inspiring listen. It is so crazy how two brothers invented the airplane and it's referred to as the flying machine throughout this book.

It's so hard to imagine a time when people lived with cars but believed flying was impossible.

Wilbur and Orville were builders through and through. Their story is so incredibly inspiring it's hard to put into words. Before the flying machine they had built and made improvements to their home they lived in. Then they owned a bike shop and the bike shop business actually funded their entire process of building the first ever plane.

One thing I found really fascinating was that during this period when bikes were becoming more and more mainstream, there were some articles being written about how bikes are really bad and dangerous for kids. Because they spend less time with books and can go miles away from home in such a short period of time. And if you think about nowadays, parents would love it if their kids spent time biking around outdoors instead of sitting at home on digital devices.

The best and most inspiring part of this book is by far the process of building a working prototype of the flying machine. The process took 4 years. There were periods where Wilbur himself started to doubt if it's actually possible. People at the time believed flying is either impossible or won't be possible for the next 1,000 years. A lot of people made fun of the brothers wasting their time with building what's not possible and called it a silly project.

But they pushed through all of that. It's just so hard to imagine how much resolve and belief you need to have to work on something that the whole world believes isn't possible. Truly truly inspiring.

I loved this book. A fantastic telling of how it was done. Have so many thoughts but there's only one that matters. Never give in.
